SIL and SDA are two of the most confused terms in the NDIS. They sound similar, but they pay for completely different things. Here is the simple version.
SIL is the support
Supported Independent Living (SIL) funds the people who help you day to day: personal care, cooking, cleaning, medication and skill building. It is about the human support inside your home.
SDA is the building
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funds the home itself, a purpose built, accessible property designed for people with high physical support or complex needs. Think ramps, wider doorways, assistive technology and robust construction.
Can you have both?
Yes, and many people do. SDA pays for the specialist housing, and SIL pays for the support delivered inside it. They work together but are funded and assessed separately in your NDIS plan.
Which do you need?
If you need daily support but a standard home suits you, you may only need SIL. If your disability means you need a specially built home, you may be eligible for SDA as well. An Occupational Therapist usually assesses SDA eligibility. Your Support Coordinator can guide the process.
Pursue Ability supports people in both SIL and SDA settings and can help you understand your options.
